Located about 30 minutes north of the popular Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, UNT sits just outside of downtown Denton, Texas. Denton has a small town vibe to it with a reinvigorated downtown square, and you’d be hard pressed to find an area without live music both downtown and on UNT’s campus. I-35 runs through the city as well, so day trips down to the bigger cities is easy and accessible. North Texas itself has a beautiful campus. While the buildings overall may be a bit more dated, they’ve begun to renovate the insides creating a really cool neo-rustic look. More notable, though, is the amount of green on campus. Not including the Mean Green shirts on students and faculty, the heart of UNT’s campus is covered in trees and bushes. Not only does it create a relaxing feel around campus, but it’s really appreciated during the hot Texas days when you’ve got plenty of shade to hide under! During my visit, the staff and students I spoke with consistently highlighted the “y’all means all” mentality that shines through. While one may not think of Texas as the first state to highlight and prioritize inclusion, UNT has made an effort to make their campus comfortably welcoming for all. In recent changes, students are now allowed unlimited sessions with mental health advisors on campus and there is a financial literacy resource available to students for free that helps them transition into financial independence while in school. It’s impossible to mention North Texas without mentioning their music program. With Grammy nominated faculty and a full-scale recording studio, it’s no wonder why UNT’s performance major has been voted the best in the nation. Another cool fact about the music program is any student at UNT can take music classes whether or not they’re in the major. Whether music and performance are passions or career plans, UNT has something for you. North Texas also has a fantastic education program as well, and partners with the Dallas Cowboys in their Frisco location to provide opportunities and resources for individuals interested in professional sport or physical education pathways. With so many schools in the state of Texas garnering media attention through notable athletics, UNT can sometimes feel like it flies under the radar. It would be a shame to skip an opportunity to visit UNT, though, because it truly does offer something unique in the state of Texas.

About #TourTuesdays
Throughout the next few months, we are going to highlight various colleges and universities across the globe, some of which you may not have even heard of. Although we have no affiliation with any of these programs, we hope these tour notes will help you discover a new option, learn something new about a school you already know, or encourage you to explore a different type of institution that you otherwise wouldn't have explored.
