Located in the heart of Dallas, Southern Methodist University is home to roughly 6,000 undergraduate students and just over 12,000 total students on campus. SMU, similar to other urban campuses, almost feels hidden away despite its location.
When you enter the campus, the buildings space out dramatically compared to the outside world, green spaces pepper your view unlike the concrete jungle less than a mile away, and everything feels just a bit quieter.
With a 1:11 student-to-faculty ratio, SMU does an excellent job of making sure your student is seen as a name rather than a number. They also provide a unique opportunity to double major much easier than many other schools due to the commonality of the core courses required for each student.
SMU is a more homogenous school, with nearly 70% of the population being white, but has stated it is making a vested effort to invest more in its diversity efforts, specifically amongst its STEM programs as well.
SMU is probably best known for its business college, namely Finance and Economics due to the available resources in the Dallas area, but Sport Management has taken a larger role in the school as well given the massive sports market of the greater DFW area.
Lastly, the price tag is liable to catch most families’ attention, but the sticker price of private colleges can frequently be deceiving. Average financial aid packages at SMU can award more than $30,000, and nearly 70% of the student population ultimately graduates with no student debt.
