Located in the quiet town of Eureka, Illinois, Eureka College defines the city it occupies. While the college itself is not large, the city too has a small-town vibe in a rural environment. Peoria, Illinois is the closest “big” city, but any city would feel big compared to Eureka. With a population of under 600 students, many high school kids will have attended larger high schools. That number can feel constricting to some, but for others, it showcases the personal attention you’re able to get in class and the strong bonds you’re able to build with a small community of classmates. Eureka is popular with educators and criminal justice majors alike, but they really tout their acceptance rates into medical school, which is double the national average. Nurses at Eureka also have access to a Trauma I hospital in Peoria, IL, so both internships and clinical rotations are available in an incredibly high-caliber environment. Due to Eureka’s smaller community, over half of the students are actually student-athletes. With 12 sponsored sports, you’ll see multiple players who play multiple sports and the facilities are slowly being renovated as well, most recently with an all-turf football field. The personal touch is something you can’t ignore when you visit Eureka. For example, I had my name spelled out in a welcome message when I entered the admissions office, and I had multiple professors step out of their offices on my tour to chat with me about their classes or time spent at Eureka. Lastly, one of the most interesting things I learned on my visit was the fact that Ronald Reagan attended Eureka College. While most don’t associate the former president with central Illinois, this is where he learned his love of public speaking. Overall, Eureka is a unique flair. While some may consider it too small or too rural, someone looking for a close-knit community of students would find a lot of comfort in the school’s small and friendly environment.
