College football coaches are backing a move to simplify transfer portal operations by consolidating them into a single, shorter 10-day window. This proposal aims to reduce disruptions and help programs better manage their rosters.
Currently, players can enter the portal during two separate periods: a 45-day stretch after the regular season and a 15-day window in the spring. Coaches argue this fragmented schedule creates chaos and confusion. A single 10-day portal window, possibly falling between January 10–20, is emerging as a popular solution.
The NCAA is reviewing these suggestions as part of its ongoing efforts to refine transfer portal regulations. The idea of a streamlined system has garnered strong support among FBS coaches, who see it as a way to balance player mobility with program stability. While no formal changes have been implemented, momentum appears to be building for this reform, which could reshape the college football landscape.
