3 Student-Athlete Stats & Facts

No matter if you’re being recruited or not, the process of picking where you’ll spend the four or five years after graduating from high school can be a fun, yet stressful time for a student-athlete.

For the men and women who are being recruited you must decipher which coach has the best to offer you on a lot of levels. In addition to gelling with the coach and potential future teammates, along with feeling comfortable in what could be your new home, the financial aspects need to work as well. There’s so many factors and it’s your job – as well as your parents’ – to sort through all the glossy pamphlets, offer letters, fun trips, and glowing recruiting pitches to make the right decision.  

But what should you know that won’t be found in any of the pitches or pamphlets? Well,  there’s plenty, so let’s take a look at some stats and facts.

What percentage of student-athletes go on to play college sports?

6%. That’s it.

If you happen to fall into this very small percentage of athletes who make the move and become a college athlete, understand how rare that is. To break this down further there are 173, 500 student-athletes at the DI level, 109,100 playing DII sports and 183,500 in DIII. Matching the percentage of overall student-athletes who make it onto a college team, 6% of the student body on those DI campuses are athletes while the same can be said about 14% percent of the students at the DII level and 21 percent at the DIII level. How many student-athletes transfer schools?

An article written by NCAA.com sited “a 2018 study from the National Student Clearinghouse that estimated that 39% of all undergraduate students who initially enrolled in a four-year institution transfer schools at least once.” The same article stated that “13% of current Division 1 student athletes transferred from another school.” Due to the creation of the transfer portal, this has increased over the years. According to verbalcommits.com, which tracks an updates their list daily, over 1,700 DI basketball players (1,755 to be exact) have transferred or entered the portal in 2021 alone.

How many students change their major?

Let’s be honest, as a 17, 18 or 19 year old, we rarely know what we want to do for the rest of our lives. Some of us have a hard time picking a place to go to eat on a daily basis so thinking about the rest of your life as a youngster is a pretty herculean task. In a 2018 NCES report, it found that a whopping 80% of college students change their major at lease once.

There are so many wrinkles to the college process that needs to be dealt with. Not to mention being pulled in different directions by their families, friends, and potential coaches.
